Supporting the Action Plan for Irish in English-Medium Schools

Gaeltacht ar scoil

Our platform empowers every young person to access Irish language learning, fostering a positive attitude that integrates Gaeilge into daily life and increases its active use.

What is Teanga?

Teanga is a platform supporting the entire school community to learn and engage with the Irish language. It features a library of over 100 short video lessons (15–25 mins) for all levels, paired with high-quality resources and instant-feedback activities. This innovative approach empowers schools to progress toward language mastery. Additionally, the "Sárghael" leadership programme empowers student leaders (cinnirí) to play a central role in promoting Gaeilge within their own school community.

Context

The 'Action Plan for Irish in English-Medium Schools' was published at the end of 2025 by the Department of Education. This is an ambitious document which sets out recommendations that English-medium schools should undertake to promote Irish. Teanga serves the goals and aims of this document in a practical way.

What Teanga offers

Choose an item to learn more.

100+ classes between 15–25 minutes long with learning resources and interactive lessons. The learner will receive feedback and guidance that can be completed immediately, along with additional resources.

A series of videos focusing on everyday life — sport, fashion, music, yoga. Special guests will lead these videos — inter-county GAA players teaching how to play Gaelic football or a public figure teaching how to apply makeup, for example.

A live teacher will be available weekly to answer questions or address specific topics in a live class. Students must register in advance, and Zoom settings will be in place to protect student privacy. Questions can be submitted before the session to be answered during it, or asked during the session via direct message (in private).

'Sárghael' is a leadership program where four or five students from the school will be selected (students must apply) to promote Irish in their own school. There will be mentoring with a teacher employed by Teanga to organize events and a conversation circle. They must document their progress and create videos, podcasts or digital content about it. They will have the opportunity to attend a gathering at the end of the school year where every leader will receive an award/fáinne, and vouchers for a summer course in the Gaeltacht will be awarded to one group that is deemed to have the greatest impact on their school community.

Learning resources will be available to support students preparing for state exams. Templates will be available to create mind maps to promote self-directed learning and study skills.

Bríd is a language assistant being developed with Artificial Intelligence to allow learners to speak aloud to her and receive a response with another question. There will be a function for oral exams for students who wish to practice speaking for the Leaving Cert oral exam, or another function for general conversation.

Child protection is vital with Teanga. As learners attend live classes, automatic Zoom settings will always be used to allow teenagers to interact with confidence.

School principals or nominated members of staff will be able to monitor learner progress. This is a useful tool to ensure that learners are engaging with the platform and benefiting from it.

School staff members or students with exemptions will have the opportunity to learn Irish. A series of classes on the platform will be aimed at learners not following the school curriculum. These classes will focus on laying the foundations of the language and making progress. This will greatly contribute to the integration of Irish in schools, and these learners could attend the conversation circle to advance their Irish.
